As several major universities in Nashville suspend classes in favor of online instruction, schools of music and arts organizations are updating patrons on the status of their performance calendars. Here’s the latest on what’s cancelled, what’s postponed, and what is still happening as scheduled:
91Classical
The March Music Madness finale party that had been scheduled for Monday, March 23 has been cancelled. At some point in the future, after the widespread threat of coronavirus transmission has passed, we look forward to rescheduling an evening of the classical music bar trivia that had been planned for that event.
Big Ears Festival
The annual music and arts festival held in Knoxville announced via its website that Big Ears 2020 is cancelled. Those who purchased tickets to the festival, which was scheduled for the weekend of March 26-29, will be receiving a refund.
Chatterbird
Their upcoming performance of the music of Leila Adu on March 20 has been cancelled. Fortunately the group has already scheduled Adu’s return to Nashville in November of next year for the premiere of a new chamber opera.
Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University
In addition to cancelling classes this week in favor of online instruction, Vanderbilt University also cancelled all university-sponsored events through April 30, including the remainder of the Blair School’s concert season. The school is working to reschedule events as much as possible.
Frist Art Museum
The museum, which was free to visitors during tornado recovery, will suspend public programs and events and temporarily close their kids area, ArtQuest. Regular exhibition galleries will remain open. They have published a statement about their procedures to limit visitors’ potential exposure.
Update: The museum has closed through Tuesday March 31.
Nashville Symphony
On Thursday the Symphony announced that the performances scheduled for this weekend (March 12-14) have been cancelled. The organization assured patrons that they are closely following updates on the outbreak as well as the guidelines provided by the Metro Nashville Health Department, and will keep ticket holders updated on the status of future performances.

Nashville Ballet
While the School of Nashville Ballet will be closed March 11-22 to reduce the risk of spreading the virus, the company’s full performance schedule is currently happening as planned.
Nashville Opera
The company announced via email that the final week of Nashville Opera On Tour will be cancelled, which includes Sunday’s performances at Akiva School and the Belle Meade Plantation.
Update: In accordance with the Tennessee Performing Arts Center’s closure, Nashville Opera has postponed its production of Rigoletto. The opera has said they will reach out next week with more updates.
West End United Methodist Church Lenten Recital Series
These weekly free concerts are continuing as planned.
Update: These performances will happen as scheduled, but without an in-person audience. West End will continue to stream them on their facebook page.
Intersection
The contemporary music ensemble had announced that their April 24 Musica Nueva concert has been cancelled.
Nashville Public Library
The library has announced that all programming is suspended from March 16-April 16. This includes group meetings in reserved spaces and regular community programs like story time.
Metro Parks
Classes and programs are suspended through March 22. This includes after school programs, spring break activities, and athletics.
Belmont University School of Music
As Belmont has cancelled all on-campus classes through April 6, March and early-April performances will not take place as scheduled. The President’s Concert is still scheduled for April 18. Belmont has advised that this is subject to change.
Kidsville at the Parthenon
Kidsville has cancelled classes, usually held Saturday mornings, through April 18.
Nashville Jazz Workshop
Jazz on the Move, at the Frist Art Museum, has been cancelled this weekend. The workshop has cancelled all public concerts this week, but not classes.
Tennessee Performing Arts Center
The performing arts center has announced that all theaters in the venue will remain closed until April 12, citing the State of Emergency in Tennessee.
