Giancarlo Guerrero will be taking on a new position in the next concert season. In addition to his role as Music Director of the Nashville Symphony, Guerrero has been named Music Director of the Wrocław Philharmonic in Poland.
It’s not unusual for a conductor to hold jobs with multiple ensembles. From 2011 to 2016, Guerrero was Principal Guest Conductor of the Cleveland Orchestra’s annual residency in Miami. Before moving here in 2009, he juggled simultaneous gigs with the Eugene Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra. He’s also been quite active as a touring guest conductor, directing concerts throughout the United States and Europe.
In some ways, Wrocław should feel familiar to Guerrero. The fourth-largest city in Poland has a population roughly the same size as Nashvilles. Much as the Nashville Symphony makes a point of programming and recording works by American composers, the Wrocław Philharmonic has a continuing focus on Polish music. And once again, Guerrero will be joining an ensemble soon after its move into a grand, new concert hall.
Guerrero is expected to spend a total of four weeks in Poland during the coming season. After that he’s committed to eight performance weeks a year in Wrocław. For comparison, he conducted 10 weeks in Nashville during the concert season that just ended.
Guerrero is currently under contract with the Nashville Symphony through the first half of 2025.
